Even Simple Oatmeal Can Lower Cholesterol By 50 Points Or More

August 13th, 2010 -- Posted in natural remedies | No Comments »

Want to lower cholesterol by 50 points? I needed to do just that and here is how I did it. My cholesterol has been right at or a little lower than 200 for well over 15 years. I do blood tests two to three times a year to check. Recently my overall cholesterol went up to 210. I have to deliver my tests to my doctors office in order to get the special seniors price. Sure enough there was a call from the nurse urging me to come in and discuss a drug regimen to lower my dangerous cholesterol. I happily said no thanks I will lower cholesterol naturally.

In the fifteen years mentioned above my diet has steadily improved to where I was almost a vegetarian. So I figured there was something missing in my diet. My research showed that whole grains can lower cholesterol and keep them at acceptable levels. My research also showed that whole grains not only helped cholesterol but many other things as well.

In the last ten years my diet has improved steadily and at the time of the blood tests I was nearly a vegetarian. My thought said I was not eating enough of something to keep my cholesterol at acceptable levels. So I did some research and found that whole grains, not processed, are needed to keep not only your cholesterol balanced but do many other things as well.

I devised a plan which consisted of eating three bowls of oatmeal three times a week minimum. I chose organic steel cut oats from the bulk department because research once again said these had the highest nutrient value. After about a month I substituted Red Mills Eight Grain cereal once a week for variety. It is a real good whole grain cereal and there of course are others.

Four months later I got another blood test and I surprised the doctor by lowering my total cholesterol to 160. Even better I lowered triglycerides by 44 points. And it just kept getting better, I lowered bad cholesterol LDL by 32 points and HDL the good cholesterol went up slightly. Further as what I consider a real plus I used the oatmeal as an antioxidant carrier. I put on such powerhouse antioxidants as cinnamon, blue berry powder, goji extract and acai flakes. On more addition, I used bee pollen or honey which is a complete food full of nutrients. There is nothing like fixing a medical problem without drugs. Lower cholesterol naturally I say it is easier and cheaper.

Lowering cholesterol through natural means can be done easily in 95% of cases. High cholesterol is over hyped and the use of drugs is a disgrace. Drugs have side effects which in some cases can cause death. There is no need for them. Check out natural healing possibilities on our web site Natural Healing.

Sunscreen Facts – How Safe Is Your Sunscreen?

June 29th, 2010 -- Posted in natural remedies | No Comments »

For years we’ve been told to use sunscreen – even on a cloudy day – to not only protect our skin against aging, but from cancer too. However, new research is suggesting that maybe our sunscreen (or at least the chemicals it contains) maybe causing cancer! How is that possible!

We all know that sunscreens are supposed to block the Ultraviolet rays of the sun. UVA rays penetrate your skin deeply and cause wrinkles and premature aging. UVB rays mostly cause skin burring.

Sunscreens – not sun block – function through creating a chemical barrier between the UVA and UVB ray and our skin. Sunscreens are labeled with an SPF rating which means sun protection levels. Of course, the higher the SPF the higher the level of protection.

This does not mean a higher level of SPF (like 30) is two times as strong as an SPF of 15. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 just means you can stay out in the sun a little longer than an SPF of 15. An SPF of 15 will block about 93% of the suns UV rays, while an SPF 30 will only block 97% — not much different is it? Which is why it’s still important to avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day and keep covered whenever possible. A higher SPF also means more chemicals used and that may not be a good thing according to some recent studies.

There is some new research that suggests that certain chemicals found in sunscreens might not be so good for us. Some chemicals may affect our hormone levels (such changing estrogen levels within the body) and others may have significant impact on our DNA levels.

In addition, researchers propose that certain chemicals present in our sunscreen may not protect us from sun damage at all. And worst of all they believe that some might even trigger certain kinds of skin cancer. Scientists have identified 5 chemicals they suspect may be a problem and down right unsafe for us to use.
