Being diagnosed with depression can be a confusing time for many people. Not only are they literally depressed, but they are also down about the diagnosis, not knowing what to do or how it is treated. In general, there are many ways to treat depression and the method that is chosen for you by you and your doctor is based on many factors.
Cognitive therapy for depression is usually used in conjunction with prescription medications to get to the root of the depression. Although doctors will tell you that depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain, it is often triggered by issues that come up in your life, your past, or worries about your future.
Then, people are either treated individually or in group and priorities are restructured to treat depression. Other natural remedies include disciplining oneself by regular exercise or cultivating a hobby. In this way the hormone imbalance can be negated by secretion of mood elevating enzymes. Depressed feelings lead to chemical changes in the body and if left untreated can lead to crisis situation.
The most important natural remedies for depression that has worked wonders for people is to play brain games. Brain games help stimulate the organ, thereby leading to increased blood flow and balanced secretion of hormones namely serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, essentially to negate low feelings and negative mood. A population based study was also performed to understand the relationship between cognitive impairment and depression. It was found that cognitive impairment may lead to depression but vice-versa is not true. This is the underlying tenet of treating depression with brain games.
What are the brain games that help treat depression? Brain games help a lot to improve cognitive function such as memory, speed, attention span and logical reasoning ability and as a net benefit it helps to ward of diseases such as depression, Alzheimer and Dementia. Again, brain games are great companions and are fun to play. They act as stress-busters as well, thereby improving upon hormone secretion. Some of the popular brain games include word bubbles, birdwatching, moneycomb, disillusion, monster garden and many more. For example there is one game called Penguin Pursuit, in which you can improve your sense of spatial direction as you race against a rival penguin in ice. There comes obstacles and playing these help to respond to your stimuli faster. So, play these games and see the changes if you are depressed and if you are not then be happy to be away from this mental disorder.

If you discover a black, cancerous mass on a birch, you may be looking at a Siberian chaga mushroom. It can also, less commonly, be found growing ash, beech, elm or hornbeam.
Europeans have used chaga for centuries as a cure for digestive ailments, tuberculosis, and cancers of the liver and heart. [121]
The black “skin” was removed and the lighter inside boiled as tea. Being such a compact natural medicine made it a valuable, portable remedy for healers of old.
Modern research on chaga has mainly focused on its potential application as an anti-cancer remedy. In Russia, this usage was already approved as early as 1955 to treat lung, stomach, breast and cervical cancers. [122]
One modern study from 1998 showed that chaga extract did in fact inhibit growth of cervical cancer cell lines under lab conditions. [123] Another study from 1995 reported that an isolate of the active compound betulin first inhibited growth of melanoma cells in a lab, and then killed them. [124, 25]
Other research papers also confirm that some of the active compounds of chaga help retard the growth of cancer cells. [125, 126]
Although traditional healers used to peel off the black outside (probably because it looked unappetizing), the skin actually contains 30% betulin, a highly prized medicinal compound, [127] while the inside is rich in fungal lanostanes. So both parts would be valuable in preparing the tea.
Even better are chaga extracts that are made with not only the whole mushroom but also the mycelium, because the mycelium contains higher levels of medicinal proteins than the fruit body of the mushroom.
Other research has found chaga to possess powerful anti-viral properties. In 1996, two studies published results of inhibitory effects on both influenza virus [127] and HIV. [128] Considering the nature of viruses, the most likely scenario is that chaga works on viruses by enhancing the body’s own immune system, a theory confirmed by a paper published in 2002 and another in 2005. [25, 129] The same mechanism may explain the reported anti-inflammatory effect of chaga. [130]
Alcohol extract of Siberian chaga has been shown to help balance blood sugar. [131] It is also a powerful antioxidant. [132, 133]
As an amusing aside not related to human health, Siberian chaga may even be used as a tree medicine. Paul Stamets relates a story of a Quebec arborist using a chaga poultice to heal chestnut blight. Not only does it cure the tree, but the tree even becomes resistant to further infections of blight after having been treated. [134]

In an interview on National Public Radio, world-renown medicinal mushroom expert Paul Stamets recounts his discovery of the healing properties of agarikon, a mushroom growing on 500-year-old trees in the old growth rainforests of the northwestern United States.
Knowing that mushrooms are susceptible to many of the same microbes as humans, how could it be, he asked himself, that this perennial wood conk managed to stay healthy for 50 years in the dripping wet rain forest without rotting? It must have a powerful immune system, he concluded, with potentially powerful medicinal compounds that could benefit humans.
Stamets describes the agarikon conk as looking like a bee hive when viewed from the ground. Remember, they grow on the trunks of ancient tree giants, sometimes high up. (Use the agarikon-link on this page to view a picture of Paul Stamets holding an agarikon mushroom.) Please be aware that this is a threatened species and should be left alone in most cases. Just get out your digital camera if you are lucky enough to find a specimen. (Otherwise, no one may believe you.)
Using a proprietary extraction method on his organically cultivated agarikon, Stamets created an agarikon medicinal. He sent a sample of it to the Defense Department for testing within the BIO Shield Program, at a top security lab facility in Ft. Dietrich, Maryland. The BIO Shield Program is dedicated to finding remedies for use against bioterrorism threats and potential biological warfare agents, such as anthrax or smallpox.
Several tens of thousands of natural and synthetic “medicines” have been tested within the Bio Shield Program. According to John Seacrest, drug discovery supervisor within BIO Shield, the agarikon extract submitted by Paul Stamets was one of only a few agents that tested positive against viruses related to smallpox. While smallpox virus itself is not available for testing (due to it being supposedly extinct and all), the agarikon extract proved effective in inhibiting closely related viruses (presumably cowpox).
Paul Stamets has since applied for a patent on a mushroom-based anti-viral drug. Boston investor John Norris is one of his financial backers. Mr. Norris believes in the project due in part to the fact that some individuals simply are not willing or not able to be vaccinated against smallpox or other potential biological warfare agents.
As a former second at the FDA, John Norris should know enough about the field of medicine. And obviously, his belief in Paul Stamets agarikon extract is strong enough to put his money where his mouth is. His goal is that they may someday sell this agarikon extract for the defense stock-piles of NATO armies, with doses numbering in the hundreds of millions.
That may, however, still be a few years in the making. First the product needs to go through further exhaustive lab trials as well as gain FDA approval.
