Take it from an avid Boy Scout dad...

Being part of the Boy Scouts is a great excuse for getting out of town at least once a month. All the mountains, lakes, trails, hiking and swimming. Oh, I was in the Scouts as a lad but it seems a lot funner this time around. My son is working on his Star rank which is just two levels below Eagle and I couldn't be prouder of him.

My daughter is a few years younger, but a few years back she was allowed to tag allong. Now that she is on her own in Girl Scouts, she pretty much leads the troup on camp outs.

Then there is the times that just the 3 of us camp on our own. That's pretty much become our 'down' time, and the best part is that we get to spend it together as a family. Living in East Texas povides us with enough parks and trails that we will never need to stay at the same site twice.

While some folk might consider a sporting event or school funtion as quality family time, I would encourage every one to set up camp with there kids. It can be a great group event from the planning, setting up, cooking, hiking the trails, fishing, sleeping in tents, waking up to the sounds of nature. There's nothing quite like it. It could very well be the best vaction you have ever taken.
